Biography

He became elector on January 4, 1428 after the death of his father and, along with his brothers, Sigismund, Heinrich and Wilhelm, inherited all the other possessions of the Meissen house.

Frederick II

Until 1432, he had all the time to defend his country from the devastating raids of the Hussites . In 1431 he took part in a crusade against the Hussites, which ended in defeat at Taus. Deft and sneaky, Frederick everywhere sought only personal gain. After the death of the childless Thuringian landgrave, Friedrich of Peace, ( 1440 ), Friedrich and his brother, Wilhelm , inherited his lands, after which all the lands of the Wettin house were again united under one power.

This legacy gave rise to an open struggle between brothers who had long been dissatisfied with each other. Wilhelm, finding himself offended at the division of the inheritance in the Altenburg division , entered into secret relations with the Archbishop of Magdeburg . Military action opened, however, Frederick. He attacked Thuringia in 1445 , and thus the Saxon fraternal war began , ending in 1451 with the Naumburg world . Frederick entered into an alliance with the Habsburg House , and Wilhelm received help from the Bohemians, hiring from them 9000 people.

Immediately after this war, the so-called “ Abduction of Saxon Princes ” (Sächsischer Prinzenraub) took place. Insulted by Frederick, a nobleman Kunz von Kaufungen, along with other noblemen, kidnapped in 1455 the two sons of Frederick, Ernst and Albrecht , from Altenburg Castle , but they were soon returned.

Family

In 1431, he married Margaret of Austria ( 1416 - 1486 ), the sister of Emperor Frederick III , to whose election he was greatly promoted by the emperor. The couple were born:

  • Amalia ( 1436 - 1501 ), married in 1452 to the Duke Ludwig IX Landsgut-Bavarian (1417-1479),
  • Anna ( 1437 - 1512 ), married in 1458 to Elector Albrecht Achilles of Brandenburg (1414–1486),
  • Frederick ( 1439-1451 )
  • Ernst ( 1441-1486 )
  • Albrecht ( 1443 - 1500 )
  • Margarita ( 1444 — about . 1491 ), since 1463 the abbess in Zeyslitz,
  • Hedwig ( 1445 - 1511 ), from 1458 the Abbess in Quedlingburg ,
  • Alexander ( 1447 )

Frederick was succeeded by his son Ernst, Elector of Saxony .
