Biography

Richard de Gray was the son of Sir Henry de Gray and Joan de Cobham, the grandson of John de Gray, 3rd Baron Gray of Codnor . Since his father died early, Richard inherited the title and possessions from his grandfather in 1392. On September 17, 1397, he was first called to parliament as Lord Gray of Codnor. In subsequent years, Gray served as Admiral of the Thames and the South, royal chamberlain, deputy constable of the Tower , marshal of all England and the keeper of several castles. With extensive ownership of the Welsh mark , he participated in the suppression of the revolt of Owen Glendur . He became the steward of Sherwood Forest and the constable of Nottingham Castle , then was appointed Justiciary of Wales . Later, Gray was with a diplomatic mission in Gascony , in 1417 he participated in the second military campaign of Henry V in France.

Family

In 1417, Richard de Gray married Elizabeth Bassett, the youngest daughter and co-successor of Ralph Bassett, 1st Baron Bassett . In this marriage were born: John (2nd or 5th Baron Gray from Kodnor; 1396-1430), Henry (3rd or 6th Baron Gray from Kodnor; 1404-1444), William (died in 1478) Elizabeth (wife of Sir John La Zouche), Eleanor (wife of Sir Thomas Newport) and Lucy (wife of Sir Rowland Lentall) [1] .
