Henry de Gray, 1st Baron Gray from Coednor

Henry de Gray was the son of John de Gray of Coednor and Lucy Moine (presumably the daughter of Reginald de Moine, the 5th Lord Moana of Dunster). His ancestor in the male line was Anshetil de Gray , a participant in the Norman conquest of England .

Sir Henry began military service under Edward I. In 1299 he was summoned to parliament as Lord Gray of Coednor . In 1294-1297 he participated in the hostilities in Gascony . During the Scottish War, Gray participated in the siege of the castle of Kerlaverok and, possibly, in the last campaign of Edward I in Solway Fert in 1306-1307.

Henry de Gray was married twice - to Eleanor Courtenay, daughter of Sir Hugh de Courtenay and Eleonora le Dispenser, sister of the 1st Earl of Devon, and to Joan Cromwell, daughter of Sir Ralph de Cromwell. In the first marriage were born three children: Lucy (wife of NN Somery), Richard , 2nd Baron Gray of Coednor, and Nicholas ^[1] .
