In 1953 he graduated from the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography with a degree in Fine Art and Decoration for the Film, and received the qualification of “Film Artist ”. Among his teachers was an outstanding painter Yuri Pimenov [1] .

At that time, the Kaliningrad branch of the Union of Artists consisted of five people, so Nikolay Karjakin actually stood at the origins of a regional art organization [2] . In 1962 and 1966 - Chairman of the Board of the Kaliningrad branch of the USSR Union of Artists [1] .
In the 1960s , the artist often went on creative trips to the region, where he personally witnessed the harsh everyday life of Soviet workers, the nature of the Kaliningrad Territory, these impressions formed the basis of many of his works. Several times he went out with fishermen to the Atlantic Ocean : for 2-3 months in such expeditions they provided extensive material for creating large paintings. In the 1960s and 70s, he worked at the creative dachas of the Union of Artists of the USSR in the Baltic States .
Creativity
Despite a cinematic education, Nikolai Karjakin worked in the field of easel painting . The genre range of his work is quite wide: from landscapes and still lifes to portraits and plot-thematic paintings. One of the main themes in his work is marine: the artist portrayed the dangerous work of fishermen at sea, the working days of port workers, portraits of fishermen and dockers, fleet vessels in the field, under repair, in the port. Among other topics important for the artist are the revival of the Kaliningrad region , the restoration of the country after the war, the nature of the Baltic region. Nikolai Petrovich is also the author of a number of interesting chamber portraits.
Despite all the difficulties and trials suffered, the artist managed to maintain a bright and optimistic perception of the world. His paintings make the viewer a joyful impression of the fullness of life. In terms of style, the master’s work developed in line with realism . However, Nikolai Karjakin’s legacy was not a stylistic monolith, the artist’s manner and interests changed: in some works, one can see the closeness to the “ austere style ”, in others - a movement towards decorativeness, formal searches. Researchers of his work also pay attention to impressionistic trends in the artist's works.
Nikolay Karjakin became one of the most significant painters of the Kaliningrad region . His works were exhibited at many regional, republican, zonal, All-Russian, All-Union and international exhibitions (more than 40 exhibitions in total). The artworks are in collections of the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of Fine Arts , the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Art and in private collections.
