On May 21, 1881 in Washington, Clara Barton established the American Red Cross Association (in 1893 it was renamed the American Red Cross) and was president of this organization until 1904 (it was replaced by American Red Cross volunteer Mabel T. Bordman .

Clara Barton's unique contribution to the global Red Cross movement is to attract volunteers to help victims of natural disasters, help victims of forest fires in Michigan in 1881, and floods in 1882, 1884, 1889.

Clara Barton made history as an angel on the battlefield . Barton is also the initiator of the so-called “American amendment” [3] to the charter of the Red Cross, according to which this organization provides assistance not only during the war, but also in case of famine, epidemics and natural disasters. Barton did not limit her activities to the United States. In particular, under the leadership of C. Barton, American Red Cross volunteers helped victims of the famine in Russia in 1892 .

A crater on Venus is named after her.
