Beagle (from Beagle - dog breed, hound, bloodhound; pronounced / ˈbiːɡəl / ) - search system for Linux and other UNIX-like systems that allows you to search for documents, conversation logs, letters, contacts. In terms of functionality, Beagle resembles such programs as Spotlight , Home Search , Google Desktop and personalized Yandex search .

Beagle is written in C # using Mono . It uses the Lucene indexing system ported to .NET , as well as the Linux kernel inotify subsystem. Beagle contains a graphical user interface written using GTK # , but there is also a Kerry KDE interface.

Beagle can search documents and metadata (for example, ID3 tags in MP3s or comments on JPEG files). The following file types are supported [3] :

- Help files ( Texinfo , man (Unix command) )
- Images ( PNG , JPEG , TIFF , GIF , SVG )
- Music files ( MP3 , Ogg , FLAC )
- Notes by Tomboy , KNotes , and Labyrinth
- RSS Feeds (using Blam , Liferea or Akregator )
- Source code ( C , C ++ , C # , Fortran , Java , JavaScript , Pascal , Perl , PHP , Python , etc.)
- Video files (via MPlayer or Totem )
- Pages visited ( Mozilla Firefox , Konqueror , Epiphany )
Beagle can also index other file formats using third-party modules.
