Gretsin came from the Umbrian city of Higuius, apparently from a plebeian family. There is no information about his ancestors. Gretsin's brother was the consul of 17, Lucius Pomponius Flaccus . In 16, he held the post of consul-suffice along with Guy Vibius Rufus Rufinus . From 21 years old until his death in 38, Gretsin was a member of the priestly collegium of the Arval brothers .
Gretsin was an educated man, friend and patron of the poet Ovid . One of his " Love Elegies " is addressed to Gretsin [1] . Being in exile, Ovid dedicated Pomponius three poems from his “ Letters from Pontus ” [2] . The fact that he asks Gretsin and his brother Flaccus for intercession before Emperor Octavian Augustus indicates that Gretsin had some influence at court.
Gretsin had two children: a son bearing the same name, and the daughter of Pomponius Gretsin, wife of the conqueror of Britain, Avl Plavius .
