Henry de Gray ( born Henry de Gray ; died in 1219) is an Anglo-Norman aristocrat from the Grey clan.
Biography
Henry de Gray was the son of Richard de Gray of Rotherfield Grace and a descendant of Anshetil de Gray , a participant in the Norman conquest of England . He inherited from his father a number of possessions in Oxfordshire . From King Richard the Lionheart, Henry received the Tarrock Gray estate in Essex in flax. In 1199, he married Isabella Bardolph, daughter and heiress of Hugh Bardolph, and as a result acquired the Kodnor castle in Derbyshire , which he later rebuilt and expanded.
During the First Baron War, Gray supported King John Landless and in reward for this in 1216 received the Grimstone estate in Nottinghamshire .
Descendants
From two marriages, with Isabella Bardolph and Haviza, Henry de Gray had many sons, from whom different branches of the clan came. These were:
- Richard de Gray of Codnor , ancestor of the Greeks of Codnor;
- John de Gray of Scherland , the ancestor of the Grays of Wilton;
- William de Gray of Cavendish , ancestor of the Greeks of Merton;
- Robert de Gray of Rotherfield , ancestor of the Grays of Rotherfield;
- Walter de Gray, Bishop of Lichfeld (1210-1214), Bishop of Worcester (1214-1215), Archbishop of York since 1215, Lord Chancellor of England (1205-1214);
- Henry de Gray;
- Hugh de Gray, ancestor of the Gray of Heaton.
