Matthew Nimitz ( born Matthew Nimetz ; born June 17, 1939, Brooklyn, New York, USA) is an American lawyer and diplomat , UN special representative in the dispute over naming between Greece and Macedonia (since 1999) [1] .

Biography
Education
In 1956 he graduated from Brooklyn State High School.
In 1960, he graduated from Williams College with a bachelor of arts degree .
As a laureate of a Rhodes scholarship , he graduated from Balliol College of Oxford University with degrees in Bachelor of Arts (1962) and Master of Arts (1966).
In 1965, he received a bachelor of law degree from Harvard University Law School [2] .
Career
In the years 1965-1967 - Secretary of the US Supreme Court John Marshall Harlan II .
In 1967-1969 - Assistant to Personnel Affairs of the President of the USA Lyndon Johnson
In the years 1969-1977 - an employee of the law firm "Simpson Thacher & Bartlett" in New York.
In the years 1974-1975 - an employee of the office of the elected Governor of New York State Hugh Carey .
In 1975-1977 - Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and member of the New York State Health Advisory Council [2] .
In 1977-1980 - Advisor to the US Department of State [3] . During this period, he dealt with the Cyprus conflict , problems in the Eastern Mediterranean, including disputes between Greece and Turkey (see the Aegean issue ), the implementation of the Helsinki Final Act and other problems in Eastern / Central Europe , the issue of building a state border between the USA and Mexico , discussing the conditions for the status of Micronesia and others.
In February – December 1980, he was Assistant Secretary of State for Security, Science and Technology. During this period, among other things, he exercised control over US policy in the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and Eastern Europe [4] .
In 1981, with the departure of President Jimmy Carter , he returned to the private sector. He worked at the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and the investment company General Atlantic.
In 1994-1995, he was the special envoy of US President Bill Clinton to carry out a mediation mission to resolve the dispute over the naming of Macedonia (see also the Macedonian Question ) [4] . The culmination of Nimitz’s efforts was the signing on September 13, 1995 of an interim agreement between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia within the UN framework, which allowed some conflict points between the two countries to be resolved.
In 2007, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer reappointed Nimitz as Commissioner of the New York Port Authority, but with his resignation in 2008, the latter was never approved by the State Senate .
