History
In the native language, Haleakala means "house of the Sun", according to local legend, the demigod Maui imprisoned the Sun here to lengthen the day.
The national park was a part of the Hawaiʻi National Park founded on August 1, 1916 ; it was located on the islands of Maui and Hawaii . On September 22, 1961, Haleakala separated from it [2] , and the park on the island of Hawaii became known as Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park .
