History

The Sanada clan claimed descent from Saev Genji . [1] The clan banner was invented by Unno Ukiyoshi in the early 16th century. Sanada was the key vassals in the Takeda army, with the famous generals Sanad Yukitaka and his sons Sanad Nobutsun , Sanad Masateru and Sanad Masayuki .

Sanada Yukitaka founded the clan in the 16th century.

Sanada Masayuki

During the Sengoku period , the clan was led by Sanada Masayuki (1547-1611). His second son, Sanada Yukimura, was sent as a hostage to the Toyotomi clan in 1587.

In 1600, at the Battle of Sekigahar , Yukimura sided with the Western Army. He fought against Tokugawa Hidetad at Ueda Castle, successfully delaying his advance to Sekigahara with reinforcements of 38,000 warriors. He also opposed Tokugawa at the Battle of Osaka , where he died.

Edo Period

Sanada Nobuyuki was the eldest son of Masayuki . In 1587, he married Komatsuhima (Ina), the adopted daughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu (the real daughter of Honda Tadakatsu ). In 1600, he sided with the Eastern Army. He was given control of the Ueda domain and the Numata domain with an income of 65,000 koku. In 1622, Nobuyuki was transferred to the Matsushiro domain with an income of 100,000 koku. His descendants remained there until the Meiji restoration .

The forces of the Sanada clan took part in the attack on Aizu in 1868, on the side of the imperial army. They were supposed to take responsibility for the Aizu prisoners of war, but refused.
