History

Hollandse-IJssel was originally the arm of Lek , which began from Wreswijk. This sleeve was blocked off by a dam in the 13th century for two reasons: the Rhine dam near Wake bei Dürsted made the Lek a larger river, and the development of Dutch peat bogs required careful drainage. This was only possible with a lower water level in Hollands-IJssel. By order of Count Floris V , a dam was built, which was completed in 1285 (dam in Klaphek). Since then, Hollands-IJssel has been fed exclusively by groundwater, in particular the Dorslag.

After the dam was erected along Hollands-IJssel, many brickworks were founded, initially in the upper reaches (from IJsselstein to Gaudá ). They were necessary for the construction of castles, churches, city walls, fortresses and embankment walls. Clay was extracted from floodplains.

In September 1574, during the siege of Leiden, a sea of Geuze opened dams on the river in Rotterdam and the Chapel-en-den-IJssel to flood the surrounding lands and save the city.

From Dorslag to Nieuwe Maas

Both the upper and lower reaches of the river pass through urban areas, the middle part has a characteristic landscape of the green zone.

The river is formed by the confluence of the with Cromme-IJssel in Nieuwegein. At first, Hollands-IJssel flows west along the nearby IJsselstein (old town on the left bank).

The river then flows further northwest to the border of the IJsselstein and Montfort communities. Here, small ships can, using the gateway, head for Montforts-Warth. Through Villescope, where the Malvlith de Plate canal is a favorite place for kayakers, the river flows into Oudewater . Here is the mouth of the Lange-Linshoten. Near the city of Haastrecht is the estuary of the Vlist, a peat river that acts as a drainage canal for the surrounding area, diverting water to the north and dumping it into Hollands-IJssel.

Then follows the largest city on the river, Gouda , near which there is a complex of locks, . These locks control the water level in the channels connected to the river. Before Wierslois, the water level rises, so the canals in Gouda are filled with running fresh water and siltation is prevented. The difference between the water levels in the river changes due to the work of the Delta project facilities, and ranges from 1.80 m in the summer to 3.30 m in the winter.

Ships can enter the city through the gateway in Gouda and also go further north.

To the west of Gouda is the Gateway , through which most cargo ships pass to the north of the country through a dug channel connecting to . Below Gauda Hollandse-IJssel is a much wider stream with artificially fortified shores in many places on both sides. It passes through the villages of and , which are connected by a ferry. In the suburbs of Nyiverkerk-en-den-IJssel (on the right bank), it passes through the districts of Cortenord, Klein-Heathland and Grot-Heathland, the latter is connected to (on the left bank) by a bridge with a pedestrian crossing .

The lowest part of the course is urbanized: on the left bank is Krimpen-en-den-IJssel , and on the contrary, the larger Capelle-en-den-IJssel . Between these two places is the storm barrier, the first facility under the Delta project, which has been installed since 1958.
