Martens, Rolf

Rolf Olav Martens ( Swede. Rolf Olav Martens , February 22, 1942 - April 22, 2008 ) - Swedish chess player . 1967 Swedish Champion . Two-time Swedish blitz champion (1966 and 1988). As part of the Sweden national team, he participated in two team world championships among students. In 1969, he represented Sweden at a tournament in the Nordic countries . The main sporting achievement of Martens in the international arena - 2nd place at the A. Olson Memorial. The tournament was held in Gothenburg in December 1967 - January 1968. Martens scored 7 points out of 9 possible and half a point behind the winner of the tournament E. P. Geller . At the same time, Martens managed to get ahead of such famous chess players as world champion N. T. Gaprindashvili , H. Vesterinen and V. Jansa . In 1969 Martens played a draw match with the rising star of Swedish chess U. Andersson .

He had a technical education and a degree. Had a welding shop in Eslove . Engaged in political activities, primarily in the struggle for the rights of workers. Regularly spoke with articles on political topics in the publication «Unite». Martens himself defined his political views as "a strange kind of Maoism ." He was an active user of the Usenet network, where he kept his own journal. From time to time made strange statements. In particular, he denied the existence of AIDS and claimed that Miyaylo Miyaylovich did not kill Anna Lind .

Buried in Limhamns Cemetery.

In memory of the chess player, the Academic Chess Club in the city of Lund organized the Martens Foundation.
