The total length of the I-275 road is 56.38 km according to official data (recognized by the American Automobile Association , Rand McNally and Google Maps ), however, the US Federal Highway Administration recognizes a length of 48.23 km (I-275 ends at a fork in I-96 and M-14 between Livonia and Plymouth Township).

In the 1950s, maps depicted a road parallel to I-275. With the development of maps in the 1960s and 1970s, a road was laid from I-75 (from Newport) to Novi and connected to I-75 near Davisburg. In the 1970s, there were plans to recognize the northern section of Novi - Davisburg as a separate M-275 state highway. The southern section of I-275 was completed by January 1977, and in the same month the construction of the northern section of the highway was canceled due to protests by local residents (in 1979, another proposal for the construction of the northern section was rejected). In the 1980s, it was planned to complete the M-275 in Oakland County, but the plans remained unrealized. From 1994 to 2000, the M-5 road was built at the junction between I-275 and M-275.
