Plains ( English Plains ) - a city in the United States , located in the northwestern part of Texas , the administrative center of Joacum County . According to the 2010 census, the number of residents was 1,481, and the US Census Bureau estimates that 1,599 people lived in the city in 2016 [2] .

History
The first settlers to claim the land where the current city is located was the Miller family. In 1905, the family of W.J. Moon, who founded the city and named it Plains, moved to the region. Luna opened the first store in the city and the post office in 1906. In 1907, at the creation of Joachum County, the Plains became the administrative center. The moon donated a piece of land to everyone who voted for the city [3] .
In 1910, the first newspaper, Yoakum County News , was launched ; by 1922, a pharmacy, two stores, and a real estate sales office were operating in the city. In 1936, an oil field was discovered in the region, since then the main income of the city is associated with oil production and agriculture [3] .

According to the US Census Bureau , the area of the city is about 2.6 km 2 , fully occupied by land [4] .
Climate
According to the Köppen climate classification , the Plaines is dominated by a semi-arid climate of temperate latitudes (BSk) [5] .

Population
According to the 2010 census, 1,481 people lived in the city, there were 508 households and 402 families. The racial makeup of the city: 75.4% are white , 0.0% are African Americans , 0.6% are Native Americans, 0.0% are Asians , 0.0% (0 people) are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 21, 1% are other races, 2.9% are two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 58.1% [7] .
Of the 508 households, 45.3% are children under the age of 18. 65.7% of households were couples living together (31.3% with children under 18 years of age), in 10% of households women lived without husbands, in 3.3% of households men lived without wives, 20.9% of households were not by families. In 18.5% of households, only one person lived, 8.9% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.92. The average family size is 3.33 people [7] .
The population of the city by age range was as follows: 34.1% are residents under 20 years old, 22.2% are between the ages of 20 and 39, 31.9% are between 40 and 64, and 12% are 65 and older. The average age is 34.6 years [7] .
According to five-year surveys from 2012 to 2016, the average household income in Plains is $ 56,213 a year, and the average family income is $ 60,463. The per capita income for the city is $ 22,350. About 12.4% of families and 16.5% of the population are below the poverty line. Including 26.2% of those under the age of 18 years and 16.4% of those aged 65 and over [8] .

Management of the city is carried out by the mayor and the city council, consisting of five people [9] .

Infrastructure and transport
The main highways passing through the Plains are:
- 82 US motorway runs east from Brownfield southwest to Lovington , New Mexico .
- US 380 freeway runs east from Brownfield west to Roswell , New Mexico.
- Texas Motorway 214 runs north from Morton south to Seminole .
The city is home to Joacum County Airport. The airport has two runways of 1524 and 1196 meters in length [10] . The closest commercial flight airport is Lia County Airport in Hobbs , New Mexico. The airport is located about 80 kilometers southwest of Plains.
Education
The city is served by the Plains Independent School District.
Recreation and Entertainment
On the first Saturday of August in Plains, a rodeo takes place, and on the weekend of Labor Day there is a fair of watermelons grown in the region [11] .
