History
Initially, the city was called "Glavinitsa" during the Bulgarian rule, later the city was named Belsh after the ruler of Balsh II . It was the center of Malkasra during the existence of Sanjak Avlona and vilayet Ioannina during the Ottoman rule between 1670 and 1912.
Belsh is located near the ancient city of Billis . Slavic invasions in the VI-VII centuries led to the decline of Billis, while Belsh was built using materials used to plunder Billis.
