Before the reform of local governments in Estonia, 2017 was the administrative center of the Käru volost in the county of Raplamaa .
According to the 2011 census , 397 people lived in the village, of which 381 (96.0%) were Estonians [2] .
In 2000, the population of the village was 466 people [3] .
Description
The village of Käru is located near the Rapla - Türi highway, on the banks of the Käru River . It is located 23 kilometers west of the county center - the city of Paide and 17 kilometers west of the county center - the city of Türi. Altitude is 64 meters [4] . Near the village, on the Tallinn - Viljandi railway line, there is a stop at Käru .
In Käru, there is a wooden Lutheran church built in 1860 [5] and renovated in 2008 - 2009 [6] . The church is used by the parish of Käru.
The village has a main school , a kindergarten , a People’s house , a library [7] , a [8] retail chain store. The Raplamaa Forestry of the State Forest Management Center enterprise is located here ( Estonian Riigimetsa Majandamise Keskus - RMK ) [9] .
History
For the first time, a settlement on the site of a village was mentioned in 1435 under the name Kerro. In 1632, a cattle-breeding manor was founded, the forerunner of the chivalrous manor of Käru . [3] [10]
The village near the railway was founded in the 1920s [10] .

The origin of the toponym
The toponym can come from the old personal name Kerro, for example, in 1534, Hans Kerropoyck is mentioned. Also, the toponym can be compared with the word “kärg” ( Est. Kärg: käru, käre ) - “ black woodpecker ”. [ten]
