Biography

Matanbaal II is known only from Assyrian inscriptions . In one of them, he, Itobaal II of Tire and Shipitbaal II of Biblical , as well as other rulers of Phenicia , are mentioned among those who in 743 or 742 BC. e. paid tribute to the ruler of Assyria Tiglathpalasar III . How long before Matanbaal II ruled Arvad , information was not preserved. The previous known from historical sources Arvad king was Matanbaal I , in 853 BC. e. participated in the battle of Karkar [2] [3] [4] [5] .

There is no reliable evidence of the fate of Matanbaal II after payment of tribute to the Assyrians. It is assumed that it can be identical to an unnamed king Arvad, around 738 BC. e. who participated in the uprising against Tiglathpalasar III and for this was deprived of part of his possessions. It is likely that the rebellion, after which the territory of the Arvad kingdom was reduced, is an uprising suppressed by the Assyrians under the leadership of Azriyau [3] [6] .

It is not known exactly who was the direct successor of Matanbaal II on the throne. In the Tsar Sargon II , an unnamed ruler, Arvad, is mentioned, who rebelled against the Assyrians around 720 BC. e. Probably, this was already one of the successors of Matanbaal II. The next famous king by the name of Arvad was Abdul , whose reign dates back to the end of the VIII century BC. e. [3] [4] [7]
