New Zealand consists of a large number of islands. The islands of South and North are the two largest islands of the state, in size and population several times larger than all the other islands combined. The southern island is often called the " mainland " by the locals, as it has the largest area. Of the small islands, the largest in size is definitely Stewart Island, and the largest in terms of population is Weihek Island.
