Men's speed skating competitions at a distance of 5000 meters at the 2018 Winter Olympics were held on February 11 at the Gangneung Olympic Oval . 22 athletes from 14 countries performed in the competition. Qualification for the Games was carried out according to the results of four stages of the 2017/2018 World Cup. The start of the competition is scheduled for 16:00 local time ( UTC + 9 ).
During the last two Olympic Games, the champion in the 5000 meters race is the Dutch skater Sven Kramer , who will take part in the Pyeongchang Games, having managed to qualify for their fourth Games according to the results of the national , held from December 26 to 30 on the ice Tialph Arena in Heerenveen [1] . The Dutchman continued his winning streak, becoming the third consecutive champion at a distance of 5000 meters, updating his own Olympic record for one second [2] . The second place was taken by the current world record holder at this distance Ted-Jan Blumen from Canada, who was just 0.002 seconds ahead of the Norwegian skater Sverre Lund Pedersen .
