Kargas, James

James (Dimitris) Kargas ( Greek Δημήτρης Κάργας , born James Cargas ; November 17, 1966 , Detroit , Michigan , USA ) is a Greek-American lawyer in the field of energy from Houston ( Texas ) [1] . Being for many years a member of the US Democratic Party , in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 he ran for the House of Representatives from the 7th constituency of the state [2] [3] [4] [5] . Being an active member of the Greek community of the United States [6] , he is a member of the American-Greek Progressive Educational Union (AHEPA) [7] .

American Greek in the third generation. The ancestors of Kargas come from Tripoli ( Arcadia ) and ( Sparta , Peloponnese , Greece ) [3] [7] . In his youth, he worked in a family restaurant . His sister Victoria Stinsma was a national figure skater [6] .

In 1988, he graduated from the University of Michigan with a dual specialization: English and Communication [4] . Immediately took over as deputy spokesman for , then a member of the House of Representatives for Michigan. [8]

In 1992, received his doctorate in law from the American University . Upon completion of training, he first worked in a large law firm , and later as an environmental lawyer in a large interstate pipeline transport company . Has permission to practice law in Texas , Washington , DC , Michigan, and West Virginia [4] [8] .

After leaving the private sector , he joined the Clinton team in the White House and the Presidential Sustainable Development Council [4] [7] .

After leaving the White House to participate in Al Gore’s presidential campaign in Washington, Iowa and Texas, he rejoined the administration as a special assistant to the US Department of Energy’s Department of Energy’s Fossil Fuel Administration, led by Bill Richardson. [9] He also served as an intermediary between the ministry and the Southwest Border Operations Group under the President (SWBTF). Subsequently, the Department of Energy awarded him the Outstanding Service Achievement Award (2001) [4] .

Having moved permanently to Houston, he took the post of deputy director of the non-profit organization North American Energy Standards Council (NAESB), but after three years he returned to private practice, representing several startups in the field of energy sales, directional drilling and other industries .

In 2008, Houston Mayor hired Kargas as senior assistant to the city’s energy attorney, responsible for advising the mayor on all aspects of energy supplies and transactions. Currently, he performs the same functions under the current head of Houston, Sylvester Turner , and also advises the city administration on issues of contracts , renewable energy , real estate and regulation [7] .

Founding member of the Texas-based Oil Patch Democrats [4] , promoting the “realistic ” and Democratic candidates [8] .

One of the points of the Kargas election platform was an increase in federal funding for science and biotechnology [10] [11] .

He advocates the withdrawal of the Turkish military occupation forces from the northern territory of Cyprus [7] .

Personal life

Wife of Kargas Dorin Papageorgiou (also of Greek origin), whom he met at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences [7] , is a doctor of medicine , a scientist , neuroscientist , assistant professor at [6] . Both profess Greek Orthodoxy [4] [12] , being regular parishioners of the (opened with the assistance of Grandfather Kargas) [7] and the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Basil the Blessed [13] .

Dorina Papageorgiou, whose parents met in Athens, Greece, at the age of 18, after graduating from High School in the Greek capital, immigrated to the United States to continue her studies, graduating from the University of Georgia , Johns Hopkins University and M. Cancer Center. D. Anderson at the University of Texas [7] [8] .
