Honorary Citizens of Belgrade

Honorary citizens of Belgrade - the title awarded by the leadership of Belgrade on behalf of the city.

The title can be assigned to both a citizen of Serbia and any other state, either to a politician or statesman, or to a representative of a non-governmental organization or artist. A candidate for honorary citizens of Belgrade should have a contribution to the development of science, art, humanitarian activities, etc., which helped the development and image of Belgrade, the development of democracy in Serbia and the world. The decision to award the title is made by the City Assembly (parliament). Candidates are nominated by the City Council or by at least 20 deputies [1] .

The person who received the title of Honorary Citizen of Belgrade, at an official meeting of the Assembly, is presented with an official letter on stamp paper. A citizen of Serbia receives it on City Day, while a representative of another country receives it during his visit to Belgrade [1] .

The first to receive this title were generals Peko Dapchevich , Fedor Tolbukhin and Vladimir Zhdanov , who led the liberation of Belgrade in the autumn of 1944. In 1947, the title was given to the head of the Yugoslav Communist Party, Josip Broz Tito [2] .

In 1954, the leader of a foreign state, the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, became the first honorary citizen of Belgrade. Of the foreign leaders after him, the title was awarded to Jawaharlar Nehru , Gamal Abdel Nasser , Norod Sianuk , Leonid Brezhnev and others. Despite the warm relations of Josip Broz Tito with a number of leaders of Western European countries, none of them became an honorary citizen of Belgrade during his of life. Only after the death of the Yugoslav president in 1983, this title was granted to Francois Mitterrand , the president of France . After 1985, the title was not awarded for more than 20 years. After a long break in 2007, Nelson Mandela received it [2] .

At the beginning of the 21st century, Bill Gates and Michael Schumacher were nominated as honorary citizens of Belgrade. The Serbian historian Aleksandar Zdravic explained this by the breakdown of the socialist bloc and globalization, in the era of which society chooses new heroes [2] .

In 2015, for the first time, three people received the title at the same time. At the same time, Nikita Mikhalkov and Peter Handke are the first artists who became honorary citizens of the Serbian capital.
