Unholy Union (Geopolitics)

An unholy alliance is an unnatural, unusual, or unwanted alliance, sometimes between antagonistic parties. The term was used in 1855 for Western European alliances with the Ottoman Empire against the interests of Russia , Greece and the Balkans . [one]

Use of the term

In 1912, American politician Theodore Roosevelt waged a campaign against the "invisible government," the "unholy alliance between corrupt businesses and corrupt politicians." [2]

In the context of World War II, expression is used to characterize the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact . [3]

The Republic of Biafra , which existed for a short time, referred to the alliance of Nigeria and Great Britain with the USSR as unholy. [four]

The expression is often used by African nationalists to describe the predominantly white governments of South Africa, 1961-1980, Rhodesia, and the Portuguese colonies. [5] [6] [7] In UN resolution 3151 G (XXVIII) of December 14, 1973, the UN General Assembly condemned the unholy alliance between the regime of South African apartheid and Zionism . [8]
