Senate Elections
The Senate consists of 72 seats (3 senators from the capital and the province ). Senators are elected for 6 years. The number of elections for the post of senator is unlimited. Elections are held by the method of d'Hondt by direct vote - one-third of the Senate is updated every two years. Consequently, the country is divided into three groups:
- The provinces of Catamarca , Cordoba , Corrientes , Chubut , La Pampa , Mendoza , Santa Fe , Tucuman , where elections to the Senate were held in 2003, 2009, ...
- The provinces of Buenos Aires , Formosa , Jujuy , La Rioja , Misiones , San Juan , San Luis , Santa Cruz , where Senate elections were held in 2005, 2011, ...
- The city of Buenos Aires , the provinces of Chaco , Entre Rios , Neuquen , Rio Negro , Salta , Santiago del Estero , Tierra del Fuego , where Senate elections were held in 2007, 2013, ...
The Senate’s chairman of the constitution is the vice-president of the republic, who is elected with the president .
Any person who is already 30 years old can be elected to the Senate, has Argentinean citizenship for at least 6 years, has an annual income of at least 2,000 pesos , comes from the province from which he is elected, and has been living there for at least two years continuously.
Senate Work
When taking office, the senator takes an oath of allegiance to the state.
The Senate determines the distribution of public funds, adopts federal laws, civil, criminal, commercial, labor and other codes, can declare a state of war, presents for approval by the president candidatures of judges of the Supreme Court and federal courts, plenipotentiaries, leaders of the Armed Forces [1] .
Senate meetings are held in the south wing of the Palace of the National Congress of Argentina .
Current composition
On June 28, 2009, regular parliamentary elections to the Congress were held, at which one third of the members of Congress (24 people) were renewed. Newly elected parliamentarians took office on December 10 of the same year.
Political parties that have a representative office in the Senate in 2009-2011:
- 30 places - Front for victory
- 18 seats - Civil Radical Union
- 14 seats - Peronist Federal Party
- 7 seats - non-partisan
- 2 places - block "Nuevo Encuentro"
- 1st Place - Neuken Movement
