Tokugawa Munetada ( Japanese 徳 川 宗 尹 ; September 7, 1721 - January 13, 1765) is a Japanese samurai of the Edo period , the founder of the Hitotsubashi Tokugawa family - one of Gosanke (three small branches of the Tokugawa family). He was the son of Tokugawa Yoshimuna and his concubine Ume-no-kata (later Shinshin-in). He is the grandfather of Tokugawa Ienari , the 11th shogun . When his mother died, his grandmother took up the education of Munetada, and when she died, Okume-no-Kata (later Kakuju-in), Yoshimune's concubine, took up the education of Munetada.
