Story

Postage stamp USSR 1971

The painting depicts a vagrant group of acrobats . Almost the entire canvas is occupied by two: a fragile gymnast rehearses a circus number, balancing on a ball , and a powerful athlete sits nearby, resting. The picture is filled with inner drama, which underlies the composition of the picture, and is built on a comparison of contrasts. The landscape depicted in the picture is a dull, sun-scorched hilly plain, along which a country road stretches, where the wagon of a wandering circus stopped. In the background of the picture is a random passerby with a child, a dog and a grazing white horse. The dull background contrasts with the hilarious craft of artists working in the midst of a noisy, cheerful crowd of spectators. The ball and cube standing on the ground - the circus props - are also opposites. The contrast of movement and stillness is played out. The girl sways gracefully, holding her balance, the athlete sits frozen, like a monolith. He practically merged into one with his pedestal, personifying immobility and constancy.
