The painting is named after the owners, the Florentine Tempi family, for whom it was painted and from the descendants of which Ludwig I bought it for his collection in 1829 . The painting was brought from Florence to Munich after nearly twenty years of negotiations and many efforts to rescue it from the previous owners.
The “Madonna of Tempi” was created by Raphael at the end of his stay in Florence , among his other famous images of the Virgin . But if in some you can see the echoes of Leonardo's influence, with whom Rafael met and visited his workshop, then Madonna Tempi discovers a rather original solution to the image.
It is possible that the composition was inspired by the reliefs of Luca della Robbia and Donatello .
