Honno Monastery (【本能 寺】 ほ ん の う じ, "Honnō-ji", "Monastery of Principal Opportunities") is a Buddhist monastery in Japan , in the city of Kyoto . Belongs to the Hommon branch of the Lotus direction ( Nitiren - Buddhism ) [1] . Located in the Kyoto district of Nakagyo , the Teramati quarter. One of the 21 monasteries of the Lotus direction in Kyoto. The main shrine is three Buddhist treasures ( mandala of ten worlds ) [1] . It was founded in 1415 by the monk Nitiru as the Honno Monastery (【本 応 寺】) in the Sankei quarter [1] . In 1433 it was moved to the Rokkaku-Omiya quarter and renamed to its modern name [1] . In 1536 , during the Tembun distemper , it was burned by warrior monks of the Enryaku Monastery on Mount Hiei , who were opponents of the lotusovans [1] . In 1545 , it was rebuilt by metropolitan believers in the Moto-Honnouji Minami quarter [1] . In the 2nd half of the 16th century - one of the largest religious centers of the lotus destination in Lower Kyoto ; had about 30 buildings and strong fortifications [1] . In 1579 - 1582 , it was used by the tycoon Oda Nobunaga as a metropolitan residence. In 1582 , it burned down again due to the rebellion of Akechi Mitsuhide against Nobunaga [1] [2] . In 1589 - 1592 he was transferred to the quarter of Teramati. In 1788 , it burned down for the third time during the Great Kyoto fire . It was rebuilt in 1840 , but again burned down as a result of an incident at the imperial gate . The modern monastery was rebuilt in 1928 . Since then, it has only the main temple and gate. On the territory of the monastery is a mausoleum in honor of Prince Nobunaga.
