Franz Ziegler

Franz Wilhelm Ziegler ( him. Franz Ziegler ; February 3, 1803 , Varhau - October 1, 1876 , Berlin ) - German politician and writer.

Biography

He was a lawyer, then the chief burgomaster in Brandenburg-on-Havel .

In 1848 he was a member of the Frankfurt Parliament, where he belonged to the left center. After the parliament was closed, he was convicted of high treason and served several years of imprisonment in the Magdeburg Fortress; later he was mainly engaged in literary activity, wrote novels, poems and journalistic pamphlets defending the interests of democracy. In 1865 he was elected to the Prussian Landtag, where he remained until his death, in 1867 - to the Reichstag of the North German Union, in 1871 and 1874 - to the German Reichstag. Both there and here he belonged to the party of the Progressists, in whose ranks he occupied the seat on the left, democratic wing; however, in 1866, after the war with Austria, voted for indemnity .

He enjoyed great personal respect even among the ranks of his opponents.

His novels (best known as “Saat und Ernte”) and travel sketches, which do not rise above the level of mediocrity, were read and diverged in several editions; collected in the "Gesammelte Novellen und Briefe aus Italien" (Berlin, 1872). From publicist works had the price: “Wie ist dem Handwerkerstande zu helfen” (Berlin, 1850) and “Zur socialen Reform des preussischen Abgabenwesens” (Berlin, 1850). His political speeches are published under the title: “Gesammelte Reden” (2nd ed., Berlin, 1882). See K. Janike, “Der Volksmann Fr. Z. ”(Glogau, 1895).
