Ethnic Tutsi and yet not a representative of the highest aristocracy, in 1963 Nyamoyya took the post of Minister of Internal Affairs in the government of the Union for National Progress (UPRONA) led by the Hutu Pierre Ngendandumwe , and later replaced him as head of the government as a compromise candidate for the political crisis caused by clashes between the majority of the Hutu and Tutsi populations, to which the royal family and most of the political elite belonged. In 1965, King Mwambuts IV was forced to reinstate Ngendandumwe, the prime minister, who was soon killed, which triggered a political crisis that ultimately led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the coming to power of the Tutsi dictator Michel Michombero .
For the second time, Nyamoya led the government at the initiative of President Michombero, who had previously held the post personally, in the wake of a Hutu uprising sponsored by Tanzania and coinciding with the assassination of returning to Burundi in an attempt to regain power to the last king, Ntara V. When the situation was resolved a year later, the post of prime minister was abolished. Retiring from political life, he died in his native village.
