Biography
Rostislav Davidovich Dubinsky was born on November 23, 1923 in Kiev in the family of David and Evgenia Dubinsky. His father was a violinist and first teacher. After that he moved to Odessa, where he studied at the Odessa School of Music with Peter Stolyarsky , whose students were Nathan Milstein and David Oistrakh . In 1933, the family moved to Moscow, where he studied at the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory . After graduating from music school, he entered the Moscow Conservatory. During World War II, along with the conservatory, he was evacuated to Penza. Back in 1942, he began to play in the quartet. In 1945, he decided to professionally engage in chamber music.
In 1945, he founded the Moscow Philharmonic Quartet, together with students of the Moscow Conservatory from the chamber music class, under the direction of M.N. Terian , where he became the first violin. In 1946, the quartet made its debut at the Moscow Conservatory, and since 1954 the ensemble became known as the Borodin Quartet.
In June 1976, Dubinsky emigrated from the USSR with his wife, pianist Lyubov Edlina. In the same year, they, together with cellist Julius Turovsky, founded the Borodin Trio. Debuted in July 1977 in the United States, then performed in 1978 in London at Wigmore Hall. In 1992, Turovsky was replaced by an American cellist of Hungarian origin, Laszlo Varga. For 20 years, the Borodin Trio was in New York, performing at the Mozart Festivals and at Carnegie Hall.
He also performed with his wife as a duet of Dubinsky.
In 1976-1981 he taught at the conservatories of The Hague and Rotherdam ( Netherlands ). Since 1981, he taught at the music school of Indiana University in Bloomington ( USA ).
On October 1, 1997, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Died December 3, 1997 in Bloomington.
Awards and Prizes
- Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1967).
- State Prize of the RSFSR named after M.I. Glinka (1968) for concert programs (1965-1966) and (1966-1967).
- People's Artist of the RSFSR (1974).
