Summary
The embassy was organized by the three rulers of the island of Kyushu , who converted to Christianity - Omura Sumitada, Otomo Yoshisige and Arima Haruneboy. The initiator of the departure was the Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano .
The embassy left Nagasaki for Rome on February 20, 1582 , to meet with Pope Gregory XIII . It consisted of 4 young ambassadors: Ito Martina ( Ito Mansiou ), Titidziva Mihail ( Titidziva Miguel ), Nakauri Juliana ( Nakaura Dzurian ) and Khara Martina ( Hara Martino ), as well as 8 escorts, including missionaries.
In 1584, the Japanese envoys visited Lisbon and Madrid , and the following year sailed to Venice . On March 1, 1585, the embassy reached Rome and met with the Pope, who received him very favorably. All ambassadors received Roman citizenship .
A month later, the Japanese left Rome and in April 1586 went home from Lisbon.
The embassy returned to Nagasaki on July 21, 1590 . At that time, in Japan, Omura Sumitada and Otomo Yozisada had already died, and there was a ban in the country, issued by Toyotomi Hideyoshi , to preach Christianity. At the beginning of the 17th century, all 4 ambassadors, with the exception of Tijiva, were martyred .
