Biography

Born July 25, 1964.

He began his hockey career in 1983 with a student team representing the University of Wisconsin in Madison . In the 1982 draft, he was selected in the 6th round under the 120th number by the NHL club “ New York Rangers ”. He continued speaking for the university team, and later spent a year at the Colorado Rangers, until he finally matured before the National Hockey League.

Granato was useful to the new team, in his first season at the Rangers in the 1988/89 season, he scored 36 goals, which still remains a record for New York Rangers newcomers. The next year, Tony turned out to be part of the largest transaction at that time in the history of the club. Granato, along with teammate Thomas Sandstrom, was sold to the Los Angeles Kings on January 20, 1990 in exchange for center forward Bernie Nichols. As part of a club from Los Angeles, he reached the Stanley Cup final in 1993. Later, he also played for the San Jose Sharks .

As part of the national team, he was a participant in the 1988 Olympics. There, however, the Americans performed unsuccessfully, without reaching the playoffs of the competitions and taking only the 7th final place.

He completed his player career in 2001. And the very next season he became one of Bob Hartley's assistants at the Colorado Avalanche , and soon replaced him.

In 2016, after more than 10 years of work in the NHL, Granato returned to his native alma mater, heading the Wisconsin Badgers [1] [2] . On August 4, 2017, it was announced that he would lead the US team at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics [3] .
