Early years

Eric Whitney was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. From a very young age, Eric loved to listen to black metal , death metal and grindcore [4] , in particular, the groups that he learned from his cousin Ron, namely: Mayhem , Deicide and Carcass, respectively. When Eric was a teenager, his father passed away. Music helped him cope with the loss, while he listened to Atreyu and Beneath The Sky , which significantly influenced his future work [5] .

At the age of 14, Whitney first tried his hand at music, performing cover versions of various songs on an acoustic guitar [6] . The teen met rap later when he heard the album Dr. Dre called " The Chronic ." Thanks to this album, Eric became more interested in hip-hop [5] [6] . Familiar with the popular beatmaker from Europe GraveAlchemist [7] .

Music Style

In his songs, Ghostemane often combines industrial noise synths and overloaded guitars with an 808 drum machine and trap structures [8] , although in some tracks you can hear live drums . Sometimes there are breakdowns .

Eric's vocals are characterized by a fast recitative with a change of voices, howling singing, reminiscent of spell casting during rituals [9] and screaming , emphasizing the aggressiveness of sending the text.

Text Subject

The texts contain themes of mysticism , satanism , occultism , death, esotericism [9] . Whitney describes various rituals and mentions talking with spirits. In addition, there are many occult tattoos on his body [10] . For example, the hieroglyphic monad (hieroglyph, considered a combination of the Sun, Moon and primary elements) of the English mathematician John Dee . And, contrary to the majority opinion, he is not a Satanist , but the so-called. telemit [9] , that is, a follower of the ancient religious movement of Thelema , developed by Alistair Crowley [6] [9] [11] , and he also said in an interview that he adheres to the ideology of Kibalion [12] , which he dedicated the song of the same name and shot on her clip [13] .

And recently, more and more obscene themes of depression , suicide, BDSM , addiction , self-harm and hatred of people appear in the texts. Now Eric reads and sings about self-hatred, and to the world as a whole, which leads to consequences in the form of self-torture, dependence on drugs and thoughts of suicide. However, he mentioned in an interview that the negative aspects of life are his main inspiration [12] , and for this reason he still has not committed suicide.
