The Big Buddha in Nara ( 奈良 の 大 仏, な ら の だ い ぶ つ , "Nara-no Dai-batsu") is a 30-meter bronze statue of a seated Buddha in the Vairochana main hall in Nara , Japan . In historical and Buddhist literature, it is known as the Sedentary Buddha Vairochana (盧 舎 那 仏 坐像, る し ゃ な ぶ つ ざ ぞ う).

The construction of the statue began in 745 by order of the Emperor Sémou and ended in 752 . Throughout its history, it has been repeatedly broken and repaired. The authentic parts of the statue are the seat, the belly and the fingers; the rest are medieval and new restorations.
The statue is registered as the National Treasure of Japan called the Bronze Statue of the Seated Buddha Vairochana (銅 造 盧 舎 那 仏 坐像).
