Description

Body length 13-20 mm. The mace is two-colored. The pronotum has a trapezoidal shape, and somewhat extended anteriorly. Front angles of pronotum covered with sparse, short, yellow hairs. The elytra is black with two orange-yellow bands that are interrupted by the seam of the elytra. The pattern of elytra varies greatly. Epiderwes of elytra of yellow color with black spot. The shoulders of the elytra are covered with yellow-brown hairs, and on the lateral edge near the apex there are yellow hairs. Posterior chest covered with long yellow hairs. The abdominal segments have short (on the sides and on the rear edge in the long) yellow hairs. Hind tibia straight [2] .

Area

Widely distributed in Eurasia ( Europe , the Caucasus , Transcaucasia , Kazakhstan , Southern Siberia , Mongolia , northern China ), penetrates North Africa ( Algeria ) [2] .

Biology

Often found in dry biotopes with arid vegetation in the spring [2] . Is a necrophage : the species feeds on carrion both at the imago stage and at the larval stage. Beetles bury the corpses of small animals in the soil and show developed care of the larvae, preparing for them a nutrient substrate. Larvae with 6 underdeveloped legs and groups of 6 eyes on each side emerge from the laid eggs. Although the larvae are able to feed on their own, parents dissolve the tissue of the corpse with digestive enzymes, preparing a nourishing broth for them [2] .
