Description

Body length 14-24 mm. The pronotum is trapezoidal in shape with rounded front and rear angles, wide wide margins. Elytra in black with two wide stripes of orange, interrupted at the seam of the elytra. The anterior stripe reaches the shoulders, and the second to the posterior margin of the elytra. In most individuals, each of these dressings contains one black spot on each side. The antennal club is two-colored (apical segments of a red color). There is a red spot on the forehead, which may be absent in some specimens. Whiskey is covered with black-brown or yellow hairs. Epipleura is completely yellow. The posterior chest is covered with thick yellow long hairs. On epimers, there are only single small yellow hairs [2] .

Range

The species is widespread in the countries of East Asia : in the northeast of China, Korea , Japan , Russia ( Primorye , Kuril Islands - Shikotan ) [2] .

Biology

It is a necrophage : it feeds on carrion both at the adult stage and at the larval stage. Beetles bury the corpses of small animals in the soil and show developed care for the offspring - larvae, preparing a nutrient substrate for them. Larvae with 6 underdeveloped legs and groups of 6 eyes on each side emerge from the laid eggs. Although the larvae are able to feed on their own, the β€œparent” beetles dissolve the corpse tissues with their digestive enzymes, preparing a nutritious β€œbroth” for them. This allows the larvae to develop faster [2] .
