Description

Body length 24-40 mm. Coloring is monophonic black. Elytra shoulders in very short black hairs. Mace of antennas is wide, two-color - apical segments of brown color. Pronotum broad, thyroid, rounded from sides and base. Hind tibia bent, end protrusion pointed. An important distinguishing feature of the species is the absence of spikes and hairs on the apical section of the hind tibia.

Range

The Russian Far East , China , the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese Islands .

Biology

They are necrophages : they feed on carrion both at the adult stage and in the larval stage. Beetles bury the corpses of small animals in the soil (for which the beetles got their name "grave diggers") and show developed care for the offspring - larvae, preparing a nutrient substrate for them. In the absence of a main food source, cases of facultative predation or feeding on rotting plant debris and fungi have been described.
