History
Representative of the Silesian line of the Polish Piast Dynasty . The second son of John I (c. 1385-1439), Prince Zhagansky (1403-1439), and Scholastica of Saxony (1393-1463), the eldest daughter of Elector Rudolf III of Saxony .
In April 1439, after the death of Prince Jan I, his sons Balthazar , Rudolph, Wenceslas and Jan II received joint ownership of the Principality of Zagan in Silesia . In 1449, a new redistribution of the Zagan principality took place. Rudolph together with Balthazar received part of the principality with the capital in Zagan , and the younger brothers Wenceslas and Jan II began to own Przewuz land.
In 1450, Rudolph went with his older brother Balthazar on a pilgrimage to Rome . There he vowed to fight for the Christian faith, which testified to his strong religious commitment. This was also confirmed in written sources, namely in the " Chronicle of the Abbots of Zagan ", where the prince is referred to as a pious man.
In 1454, Prince Rudolf of Zaganski took part in the Thirty Years' War on the side of the Teutonic Order against the Kingdom of Poland . Gathering under his command about 1900 armed infantrymen and horsemen, he arrived in Svidvin . He was not the only Silesian prince who fought on the side of the Order. Together with the Czech military commander Bernard Schumborski, Rudolf Zaganski commanded the 15,000th order army in the battle of Chojnice on September 18, 1454 , where the Polish-gentry militia was completely defeated. About three thousand people from the Poles died in the battle, and about 300 knights were captured. Prince Rudolph did not survive the battle - he died at the beginning of the battle, after a decisive attack by the heavy Polish cavalry. It is not known where he was buried.
After the death of Rudolph, who did not leave offspring, his older brother Balthazar (1410/1415 - 1472) became the sole ruler of the Zagan principality, which caused dissatisfaction with his younger brother, John II.
