Biography
After the death of his father, he was sent by his family to Kremsmunster Abbey as a chorus. Returning then to Innsbruck , he studied music with Joseph Pembaur Sr .; in 1877 he met Richard Strauss , with whom he had been friends all his life and who dedicated the symphonic poem Don Giovanni to him. Then he continued his studies at the Munich Conservatory ( 1879 - 1882 ) with Joseph Reinberger (composition) and Karl Berman Jr. (clavier). From 1883 he himself taught piano and harmony at the same conservatory, and in 1903 he replaced Reinberger as a professor of composition; among his many students are Hermann Abendrot , Walter Braunfels , Ernest Bloch , Ernst Boe , Boto Zigwart , Walter Courvoisier , Erich Rohde and others.
As a composer, Thuille was primarily keen on opera: his first opera, The Toerdank ( German: Theuerdank ; 1897 , based on the eponymous poem written by Emperor Maximilian I ) received the first prize in the competition under the patronage of the regent of Bavaria Luitpold , the second, Lobetanz ( German Lobetanz ; 1898 , libretto by Otto Julius Birbaum ) was successfully staged in Karlsruhe . Thuille was even called "German Puccini ." Together with Strauss and Max von Schillings, Thuille was considered the central figure of the Munich Composer School. However, to date, only the chamber and, to a lesser extent, the Thuje symphonic works - primarily the Sextet for piano and winds ( 1886 - 1888 ), have enjoyed some fame. A posthumously published textbook by Rudolph Louis of the Thuje Harmony textbook, which had a significant impact on contemporary teachers.
