Biography

Tanya Plibersek is the daughter of immigrants from the Yugoslav Republic of Slovenia (in the 1950s her father worked at the Snowy hydro complex ). She first became politically active at the age of 14, when she urged her classmates in a female secondary school in the southern suburbs of Sydney, participate in peace marches. At the age of 15 she joined the Labor Party. She graduated from the in Sydney , where she studied public relations . She worked on the staff of Senator , and in 1998 she was elected to the House of Representatives from Sydney [1] .

On December 3, 2007, she assumed the position of Minister of Housing and Minister of the Status of Women in the Kevin Rudd .

June 24, 2010 retained both portfolios in the formation of the Julia Gillard .

On September 14, 2010, she received two new appointments in the , the Minister of Humanitarian Services and the Minister of Social Rehabilitation.

December 14, 2011 received a portfolio of the Minister of Health - again in the government of Gillard.

On June 27, 2013, she retained this appointment in the (from July 1, 2013, the position was called “Minister of Health and Medical Research”).

On September 7, 2013, parliamentary elections were held , lost by Labor, which resulted in certain changes in the party.

On October 13, 2013, Plibersek was elected deputy new party leader, Bill Shorten . On July 23, 2016, she was appointed Shadow Minister of Education (her responsibilities included not only school education, but also higher education), as well as the Shadow Minister for Women's Affairs. Her former duties as official party spokesperson for the coverage of foreign policy issues were transferred to Penny Wong [4] .

Personal life

She is married to a New South Wales government official, conservative , and has three children in their family [5] .
