Punsk

Punsk ( Polish: Puńsk ) is a village in the Sejnensky district of Podlaskie Voivodeship of Poland . The administrative center of the municipality of Punsk . According to the 2011 census, 1336 people lived in the village [1] .

Geography

The village is located in northeastern Poland, on the northern shore of Lake Punia, approximately 20 kilometers northwest of the town of Sejny , the administrative center of the county. The absolute height is 168 meters above sea ​​level [2] .

History

In the early Middle Ages, the territory on which Punsk is located was inhabited by yatvyags [3] . In 1597, Stanislav Zalivsky erected a church, which became the main church of the newly formed parish of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1647, Punsku was granted Magdeburg Law and a coat of arms. At the end of the 18th century, the city of Punsk was part of the Trok County in the Trok Voivodship of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania [4] .
In 1888, 887 people lived in the village of Punsk . In ethno-confessional terms, the majority of the population were Jews (576 people), the rest were Catholic Poles. Administratively, the village was part of the Saiva commune of the Suvalka district of the Suvalki province [5] .
Between 1975 and 1998, Punsk was part of the Suwalkian Voivodeship .
