Biography

Gerasim Pavsky was born in the Pavsky graveyard of the Petersburg province (now the village of Pavy in the Pskov region) in the family of a local priest Pyotr Makaryev.

In 1797, at the age of 10, he entered the Alexander Nevsky Theological Seminary . There, according to the then custom, he received a new surname - Pavsky. Throughout his years of study, he has consistently led the list of students. As a student, he was appointed teacher of elementary grades. Pavsky was poor almost to the extreme, because his father was not able to pay for his education. This forced him to provide various services to less talented, but wealthy fellow practitioners [2] .

In 1814, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy with the first rank list with a master's degree in theology. His term paper on the title of master in the class (department) of theological sciences and the subject of the Sacred hermeneutics "Review of the book of Psalms, the experience of archaeological, philological and hermeneutical" was recommended for publication and published in 1814 as a model of the scientific achievements of graduates of the new school. It was written and published in Russian, in contrast to most of the works published in Latin [2] . Was left by the teacher [3] .

In 1816-1817 he taught the Law of God at Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum [4] .

Since 1818, he was a professor of Jewish language at St. Petersburg University, and since 1819, he was a professor of theology.

He was a translator in the Russian Bible Society . In 1821 he was awarded a doctorate.

In lectures at the Academy, he read to students his translations from the Old Testament ; when arranging the texts, he was guided by chronology , which violated the accepted order of the Old Testament canon .

In 1826 he was appointed the legal teacher of the heir Alexander Nikolaevich ; He was dismissed in 1835 at the insistence of the metropolitans of St. Petersburg Seraphim and Moscow Filaret .

In 1841, Metropolitan of Kiev Filaret (Amphitheaters) , an opponent of the Russian translation of the Bible, received a denunciation of the danger of a new underground translation. The author of the denunciation, Agafangel (Soloviev), considered the translation of Pavsky to be a temptation. After the chief prosecutor of the Synod, Count Nikolai Protasov , joined the case, an investigation was launched against Pavsky. About 300 copies of the transfer were seized and destroyed. Pavsky was threatened with deprivation of dignity, but then they decided not to make noise from this story [5] . Several copies were kept in the Synod and classified. The case ended with a “private” exhortation to the scientist and an order to keep the participants of the illegal printing of the translation in a lithographic manner under observation. Some academics were fired.

In 1858 he was elected an ordinary academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences [6] [7] .

Since the beginning of the 1860s, due to foot illness, he was no longer able to leave the apartment. On April 7, 1863, confessing and partaking of the holy mysteries of Christ, he departed to the Lord. Buried in the cemetery of the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg. In the Soviet period, the cemetery was destroyed, the location of the remains is currently unknown [2] .
