Military Service

Born into the family of PIDE inspector Barbieri Cardozo , in 1962 - 1974 deputy director of the political police of the New State [1] . He was brought up in the spirit of salazarism and right-wing radicalism .

Nuno Barbieri served in the navy, had the military rank of 1st lieutenant. He participated in the colonial war in Portuguese Guinea and in Angola . He negatively perceived the Portuguese revolution on April 25, 1974 . He stood on the positions of tough anti-communism , was extremely hostile to the PKP and the allies of the Communist Party in the ICE . Supported by General Spinola [2] .

On January 6, 1975, Barbieri Cardozo Sr. created an underground terrorist Portugal Liberation Army (ELP) in Franco-Spain . However, Nuno Barbieri did not join the organization of his father, as he continued naval service.

Political Struggle

On March 11, 1975, Spinola's right-wing supporters attempted a coup d'etat . Nuno Barbieri actively participated in these events [3] . His task was to seize the radio station as part of the Alpoin Kalwan group. Government forces quickly suppressed the rebellion and arrested many participants. Barbieri was jailed in Caxias.

On August 19, 1975, Nuno Barbieri was sent for a medical examination. The prison van was stopped by ELP militants [4] . Threatening to guard with weapons, they freed Barbieri [1] . After that, he illegally moved to Spain and joined the Democratic Movement for the Liberation of Portugal (IDLP), created by Spinola and Calvan.

Whereas former PIDE employees were in the ELD of Cardozo Sr., then in the MDLP were army officers, especially sailors associated with Kalvan. This determined the choice of Nuno Barbieri. He participated in the actions of the MDLP, was considered by the left and the Communists as "counter-revolutionary terrorist", "fascist" and "bombist".

After a decisive clash on November 25, 1975, the political situation in Portugal changed in favor of the right-wing forces. April 29, 1976 Spinola dissolved MDLP. In October 1977, Nuno Brbieri returned to Portugal and resumed his service at the Navy [2] .

State attitude

In 1999, Portugal passed a law to "review the situation of military personnel who participated in the transition to democracy after April 25, 1974." This act provided for the restoration of official statuses, including the assignment of new military ranks and financial incentives, to those Portuguese military personnel whose career was interrupted in the 1970s for political reasons [5] .

In 2008, a special commission of the Ministry of National Defense examined the issue of applying the law to Nuno Barbieri. A positive decision was made. Barbieri’s pre-revolutionary service is qualified as fulfilling a patriotic duty, post-revolutionary actions as support for the legitimate President Spinola and resistance to attempts to establish a new dictatorship [2] .

The decision of the commission provoked sharp protests of the PKP and the Left bloc [6] . Finance Minister Fernando Teixeira dos Santos - a member of the Socialist Party - refused to sign the corresponding order. Nuno Barbieri sued the Lisbon Administrative Court.

In 2011, the socialist government of Jose Socrates was replaced by the center-right cabinet of Pedro Pasush Coelho . October 15, 2015 Minister of Defense Jose Pedro Aguyar-Branco and Minister of Finance Maria Luis Albuquerque - representatives of the Social Democratic Party - signed an order to assign Nun Cardoz another military rank - captain of the Navy . This event was regarded as the political success of the extreme right-wing forces [5] .

Personality traits

People who know Nuno Barbieri note among his personality traits love for his father, devotion to the ideas of Cardoz Sr., as well as his passion for playing rugby [1] .
