Story
The next, the fourth in a row, franchise game, carried over to 2142. It has been several decades since global cooling began on Earth, which led to a new ice age . The glacier captures more and more vital areas of the developed countries of Eurasia . People do not have enough territory to live. There are fewer places left where you can still move around without special insulated suits. A new world war erupted, called the Cold. The war for territory, for resources, for life. The game does not use laser or ultrasonic weapons, but a firearm, due to which shots are heard.
Two large blocs of countries are participating in the hostilities: the European Union (EU) and the Pan-Asian Coalition (PAC), which includes Russia , Korea , Mongolia , Japan and some Asian countries. By 2138, the PAK and the EU were ready to start a confrontation for the remaining world resources.
First Campaign
In Battlefield 2142, the battles of the First Campaign are unleashed, unfolding immediately after the outbreak of hostilities in October 2139.
Pan-Asian Coalition acts as an aggressor. Unbearable living conditions in the territory of the PAC countries force the start of hostilities against a neighbor. The front line during the first campaign rolls from the western borders of Russia, through Europe , to North-West Africa .
The Cold War began with a large-scale offensive by the PAK, on a wide front stretching from the Persian Gulf to the Baltic Sea . The offensive resulted in the capture by the Pan-Asian coalition of most of Europe. The long-planned exodus of the EU population to Africa through the Mediterranean Sea has begun. In 2142, the formation of the Mediterranean Wall took place - the defensive line of the EU forces stretching from Morocco to Egypt . During the ensuing offensive by the PAK forces on the territory of North Africa, the confrontation became protracted and by 2145 resulted in the beginning of the Second Campaign.
Second Campaign
In the Northen Strike booster pack that followed the original Battlefield 2142 or the Northern Offensive, the parties change places - the PAK, having occupied Europe, is developing the glacier-covered territories, which have retained rich infrastructure, while the EU is launching the Second Campaign, having launched a large-scale operation to free its former northern territories . During the offensive to the north, EU troops reach the former Central Germany .
Game Concept (Gameplay)
One of the main distinguishing features of the franchise is the flag capture system, on which the gameplay and the use of defibrillators are built , with which doctors can literally resurrect the wounded in shootings. The innovator in this was Battlefield 2142 , before that defibrillators appeared only in single player campaigns, as well as in other games of the Battlefield series. In other games, a shootout usually ends with the death of one of the opponents, while Battlefield leaves a chance for a well-coordinated team to hold on for a long time, making up for losses. Great importance is attached to the work in the departments, the leaders of which are able to establish an additional landing point, which was not in the previous parts.
Rules
The rules of the game are determined by EA , they are almost the same as for BF2 . There are restrictions described in the rules for which players can be kicked or even banned from servers .
Conquest - The rules of the main game mode have not changed much. Each team is given a certain number of points, which will decrease as a result of the successful actions of the enemy team.
Storming - The purpose of this mode is to make the enemy team lose all their points. On the maps of the Sturm regime, there are a number of Control points serving to revive the soldiers. Holding more than half of the control points, you make the enemy team lose points. The death of a soldier also leads to a decrease in team points. Some maps allow one or both teams to capture all control points. This leads to the so-called Fulcap ( Eng. Full capture - complete capture ) - the loss of the ability of soldiers of the team, subject to Fulcap, to revive. After the death of all the soldiers of the team, subject to fulcap, its loss follows.
Titanium - A new game mode. Involves the warring parties in the battle of the two Titans (a mixture of air battleship, landing ship and carrier-based carrier) . Titans move above the surface at a height of several hundred meters and can both conduct shelling and land troops on the surface. The goal of the battle is to bring down the enemy Titan. Capturing the mines located on the ground, you can launch Block-3 anti-titanium missiles. With their help, the Titan’s shields are first destroyed, preventing the enemy from entering the board, and then the Titan himself. After the shields are destroyed, you can go on an assault on titanium: by destroying the four control consoles, gain access to the reactor hall and try to destroy the reactor itself. Some time after the explosion of the reactor with rockets or from the inside, the Titan will explode, so you must immediately run away or you will explode with it.
With the release of booster packs and add-ons, DICE usually offers new game modes or modified old ones. So in the supplement, Assault Lines mode was introduced, where the advancing side can capture the enemy’s base, only controlling all the other points on the map.
Incentive System
To attract users, DICE has simplified and at the same time expanded the mechanism for issuing titles. The dispensing interval has significantly decreased - compared to the second part of the game, the player receives new ranks more often. The game has 43 ranks (40 ranks that a player can get for points and 3 for first places in the statistics.) In addition to ranks, there is an overgrown system of medals, badges, ribbons and badges.
Each rank is followed by the issuance of additional equipment for four different classes of soldiers (there are 50 types of equipment and weapons in total: 40 in the original game and 10 in the booster pack). The player is free to choose from various weapons, such as Lambert’s carbine, and technical devices, such as the IT-33 camouflage device, which provides 90 percent invisibility.
Game stats
The ranking system is supplemented by a statistics system, which was also introduced in Battlefield 2 . Everyone can get comprehensive statistics about all the players spending time on the Electronic Arts ranking servers. Maintaining leadership in certain categories, such as the number of frags recruited using a particular weapon, is encouraged by promotion to Major General, Lieutenant General or Generalissimo.
The game has the ability to collect registered tokens of other players. This requires killing the enemy with a knife. In the rating system, it is possible to view all players whose registered tokens are collected by a soldier.
Collecting tokens changed the approach to the game, and for some players it became a “fix idea”: to collect the top 17, top 50, top 100 ratings; get tokens of the first three players of all countries; clan tokens, etc. But in connection with the disconnection of servers, all this has lost its meaning.
Maps
They are 20 maps, 10 of them relate to the original Battlefield 2142 , 3 to the Northen Strike add-on, the rest are included in the update. The Tunis Harbor map is unique in that the battlefield uses completely different sections for 16 and 32 players.
Class System
The troops in the game use machine guns, submachine guns, anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade launchers, portable anti-aircraft missile systems, anti-tank rifles, tanks, light SUVs, assault and transport aircraft and armored personnel carriers, etc. Although the weapon is a firearm, it can be assumed that ammunition is used with some new type of bullets, and the gunpowder was apparently replaced with something with the blue color of the gases. Part of its equipment is convertiplanes (aviation) and hovercraft (PAK tank).
Four classes of fighters carry various types of weapons, which, as in Battlefield 2, can be selected from the list available to this class. Compared to the previous game, the selection series has greatly increased. Most of the weapons and equipment can be equipped with extensions or replaced with a more advanced model. The system of ranks and incentives offers to open access to new equipment with obtaining ranks. Any samples of weapons are available to the Brigadier General, while a private soldier goes into battle only with a pistol, rifle and basic equipment.
Each of the infantry classes has its own spectrum of application on the battlefield:
- Sniper-saboteur (Recon) - conducts sniper fire on infantry or engages in sabotage activities. Armed with a sniper rifle or carbine and pistol. Equipped with devices for camouflage and sabotage. Explosive packages saboteur can be fixed on any surface and undermine any equipment and command modules. Masking devices allow a saboteur to become 90% invisible (you can notice a saboteur in camouflage close up, see it on the radar or by the characteristic squeak of turning the invisibility system on and off).
- Assault (Assault) - conducts combat at any distance, armed with an assault rifle and a pistol. It can expand the capabilities of conducting combat at close range (under-barrel shotgun) and long-range (rocket-propelled grenade launcher) distances. In addition to combat skills, the attack aircraft performs the duties of a field doctor. With a defibrillator, he can instantly reanimate wounded comrades or kill enemy soldiers if he comes close enough.
- Engineer (Engineer) - conducts a battle on technology or against it. Armed with anti-tank or anti-aircraft rocket launcher and anti-tank rifle “Pilum” and a landing submachine gun. An engineer repairs any equipment on the battlefield, sets up minefields and conducts mine clearance. Additional special equipment available to the engineer serves to support the equipment.
- Support soldier (Support) - usually engaged in the defense of positions and a tray of ammunition. Armed with two machine guns, a shotgun and a gun. It can deploy an automatic protective turret, immobilize equipment and automatic turrets with EMR grenades, and has a number of other special devices to support infantry.
Any fighter can drive vehicles, including enemy ones.
Northern Strike
This add-on is a mini-add-on (Booster pack). It is available only as an add-on, downloaded from the Origin Internet service, launched by the publisher of Electronic Arts or a diskless DVD-Box version where there is no disc, but only code, or as part of Battlefield 2142 Deluxe. The action takes place in northern Europe. The troops of the Pan-Asian Coalition entrenched in the former territory of the European Union and began to export material resources from abandoned cities and military bases of the EU that were under a layer of snow and ice.
In addition, there are 3 new maps, two types of equipment and the game mode Front Line. Unlike the First European Campaign, in which EU troops were slowly losing ground in Europe, now is the time for an offensive. In addition, a new Assault Lines mode has appeared, in which the PAK defends itself and the EU advances. In it, the EU team has to capture and defend all control points, and then try to capture the main base of the PAK.

Battlefield 2142 received positive reviews. Costa Andreadis of Hyper praised the game for the Titan mode, an advanced reward and reward system, and well-designed maps. However, he criticized him for problems with a delay in landing of the titans [17] .
A few months after the release of the first version of the game, Electronic Arts released a patch that fixed most of the bugs in the game [18] ; official widescreen support did not appear until patch 1.5 for the PC version of the game was released on May 30, 2008 [19] . The Mac version of the patch was released two months later, on August 1, 2008.
Northern Strike also received generally positive reviews, although slightly less than the original Battlefield 2142.
