History

The current church was built on the island of Pyasek, on the site of the medieval chapel of Blessed Joseph, Joachim, Natalia and Hadrian, demolished in the XVII century [2] .

The Church of St. James was erected in 1686-1690 according to the design of Sigmund Linder. The temple was built in the Baroque style, one-nave, with a decorative turret on the roof [2] . Before the secularization of 1810, the church belonged to the Augustinian monastery, after which a significant part of the property was taken away, and a teacher's seminary was organized in the buildings of the former monastery, which lasted until 1909 [3] . In 1852, the church was restored and re-consecrated in honor of St. Anne [2] .

In 1919-1921, the church served as the center of the Polish community of Breslau, after which it was transferred to the old Catholics . In 1945, during the siege of Breslau, German troops moved more than half a million books from the Royal University Library to the temple, where the headquarters of the Festung (fortress) Breslau was located. All of them burned down on the night of May 10 to 11 [2] [3] .

In 1948, the ruins of the church were covered with a roof to protect them from further destruction. June 10, 1970 they were transferred to the Polish Orthodox Church, which began in 1971 the reconstruction of the temple. In 1975, a semi-submerged crypt was discovered. After clearing, a separate entrance was equipped and the Church of the Holy Vilnius Martyrs was equipped [2] .
