Biography

She was born on June 30, 1940 in the village of Khlebodarovka, Volnovakha district, Donetsk region . After ten years in the neighboring village of Donskoy, she worked for two years at a local chemical and metallurgical plant. In 1959 she entered the faculty of theory and art of the Kiev State Art Institute, founded shortly before that. In 1964 she graduated from the Kiev Art Institute with a degree in Art History. For more than ten years she worked in the publishing house " Radyanska Shkola " as an editor of the art editorial board and as a senior editor in the editorial board of aesthetic education. In 1971-1974 she taught courses in Russian and Soviet art at the Kiev Art Institute.

In 1974 she entered graduate school at the Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnography . M.F. Rylsky, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Since 1977, she worked at the Institute of Art Studies, Folklore Studies and Ethnology. M.F. Rylsky, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, chief scientific officer of the department of fine art.

Valentina Ruban combined scientific work with public life: she gave lectures, spoke at international conferences, participated in discussions of art exhibitions, and carried out consulting work with museum workers in Ukraine.

Author of books, albums, catalogs devoted to pressing issues of history and development of contemporary Ukrainian art. She participated in the writing of the research “History of Ukrainian Culture” and “History of Ukrainian Art”. Valentina Vasilievna put a lot of effort into the study of the portrait genre.

In 1979, she successfully defended her dissertation on “Ukrainian portraiture: development trends”, in 1990 she defended her doctoral dissertation “Ukrainian portraiture from the late 18th – second third of the 19th century”.

Over the past decades, she has worked intensively on the trilogy “Artistic Birth of Ukraine”. The volume about Vasily Krichevsky was signed for publication at the end of 2003, the book about his brother Fyodor Krichevsky is still being prepared for publication.

  • 1991 - “Anatole Petritsky. Portraits of scholars ”;
  • 1994 - “Painting of churches in Ukraine. The image of the Virgin in Ukrainian painting ";
  • 2004 - “Krichevsky and Ukrainian art culture. Vasil Krichevsky ";
  • 2004 - "History of Ukrainian Culture" (co-authored).

Awards and titles

  • 1987 - Prize named after academician A.I. Beletsky in the field of literary and artistic criticism;
  • 1991 - Doctor of Arts;
  • 1994 - Honored Artist of Ukraine;
  • 1997 - Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine.

Family

  • Husband - Valery Alexandrovich Kravchenko (1941-2001), Ukrainian statesman, first minister of foreign economic relations of independent Ukraine (1991-1992).
