Biography

He graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Tbilisi University (1952) [1] .

In 1953-1960 he worked at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the GSSR. From 1960 to 2008 - Head of the Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics (from 1999 - General and Applied Linguistics), University of Tbilisi [2] . Doctor of Philology (1963), Professor (1964).

Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1979) - Department of Literature and Language. Academician (1984) - Department of Literature and Language (Linguistics). [1] .

Full member (since 1974) and president (2005—2013) of the Georgian Academy of Sciences .

Member of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 11th convocation (1984-1989) from the Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic [3] .

The author of famous works in the field of Indo-European linguistics, ancient languages, theoretical linguistics and cartvelology . In 1972, together with Vyach. Sun Ivanov put forward the so-called glottal theory , which is finalized in their joint two-volume monograph Indo-European Language and Indo-Europeans (1984).

A number of works by academician T.V. Gamkrelidze are devoted to typology and the origin of writing. From 1988 to 1994 he was the chief editor of the journal “ Questions of Linguistics ” [4] [5] .
