Gluckhennentaler ( German: Gluckhennentaler - thaler with a hen) is the name of the commemorative taler medal of 1691 in the city of Basel . The reason for its release was the successful resolution of the conflict between the magistrate and the townspeople [1] [2] [3] [4] .
The obverse of the medal contains a bird's eye view of the city, the reverse contains hens with chickens. The caption below “ALIT ET PROTEGIT” means “Feeds and Protects”. The image symbolizes the maternal love of the city authorities for its residents. The design of the medal was made by the engraver S. Hendrick. The diameter of the glukenhenthaler of 43 mm corresponds to the size of the coins of the thaler type, while the weight of 24.5 g is much lower than the standard. In this regard, even though a number of numismatic sources attribute the gluckhennalentals to coins, experts at the Künker auction house claim that this is a medal. They are also absent in the world famous coin catalogs of Krause [5] [1] [2] [3] [4] .
