Biography
The son of a farmer . Great-grandson of the Faroese national hero Nolsoyar Pall . He studied agricultural sciences in Norway, where he got in touch with the Norwegian national movement, which influenced his struggle for his native Faroese language , which was largely assimilated by the Danish language , which dominates the capital of the Faroe Islands Torshavn .
In 1888, the Faroese national movement arose. J. Patursson was one of the main participants in the independence campaign “ The Christmas Meeting 1888 ” . Especially for him, he wrote the fighting anthem Nú er tann stundin komin til handa (“Now the time has come”).
In 1901, the 35-year-old J. Patursson was first elected to the Danish Folketing (1901-1906, 1918-1920 and 1928-1936). Member of Legting ( Parliament of the Faroe Islands) from 1901 to 1946.
In 1903 he published the book Færøsk politik ( Faroese Politics ), in which he formulated five principles:
- Legting is popularly elected, led by the chairman and his deputy.
- The administrator (governor) of the islands participates in the work of the sessions, but he does not have the right to vote.
- No Faroe Islands law comes into force without the approval of Legting .
- Legting has the right to propose laws that can be directly approved by the chairman.
- Under the leadership of the chairman, Legting gains control of the finances of the Faroe Islands.
At that time, such theses were revolutionary, and today they are the basis of Faroese politics.
J. Patursson was a nationalist politician. In 1906, he founded the “New Self-Government” Party of the Faroe Islands (Sjálvstýrisflokkurin), which advocated the gradual expansion of the rights of the Faroe Islands until it attained a position virtually independent of Denmark, but without declaration of formal independence. In the first decades of its existence, it was one of the largest parties in the country.
In 1939, he was co-founder of the Union Party , becoming deputy chairman of the party.
